Electric plenum heaters are designed to fit in the hot-air plenum of most gas and fuel oil furnaces and many wood furnaces. Electric plenum heaters use the existing thermostat and blower of the furnace. During periods of high electrical demand, the electric plenum heater automatically switches from the electric heat to the back-up system of gas or fuel oil. Electric plenum heaters come in heating outputs of 20 kW (68,000 Btus), 15 kW (51,000 Btus) or 10 kW (34,000 Btus), and are 18 inches in depth and come in a width of 15 inches or 18 inches to fit most hot-air plenums. If the plenum is too large, baffles must be installed to direct the airflow over the heating elements. They also work with central air conditioners and heat pumps.
