The Future is in GreenWhatever you think about global warming, whether it is fact or fiction, we all realize that it is time to reduce our use of nonrenewable energy sources. Dalai Lama says, “be gentle with the earth”. What better way to do this than to make use of power sources such as the wind, solar, hydropower, methane and fuel cells. For more information about solar power visit www.solar-rating.org. Our power supplier Dairyland Power is working on bringing green power into our power system with the use of wind farms, methane digesters and landfill gas digesters. Green Energy is not going to be cheaper, but it is a step in the right direction for our planet earth. Scenic Rivers Energy Cooperative sponsors the Evergreen program. We offer blocks of 100 kWh of wind power for $1.50 per block. When a customer agrees to this offer, we purchase that much power from wind farms and the cost is added to the customer’s bill. This is in addition to the normal charge for electricity. There are tax incentives for building your own green power systems such as windmills, solar and methane digesters. Scenic Rivers is considering net metering for individual power producing systems so that excess electricity can be sold back to Scenic Rivers. There are also tax incentives for installing insulation and energy efficient windows thus reducing your energy usage. To learn more about these tax incentives visit these websites: http://www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm or http://energytaxincentives.org/ |
